Friendo/ Lab Coast - Split

Split by Friendo/ Lab Coast

4...according to our on Thu 01 Sep, 2011.

I don't know where the photo from the cover of this split was taken but it looks amazing. I wish I was there instead of dreary old Holbeck. Maybe if I save my pennies...and figure out where the hell it is. This is split number three of four in Faux Discx's current series, this time pairing two Canadian bands, Friendo (who were also seen in the four-way first split of the series) and Lab Coast. The Friendo side is as likeable as you'd expect from these guys; shimmering and melodic garage pop. The girl is doing the vocals on both of these and they're both good songs with catchy tunes and comforting reverb. Flip it and there's more reverb courtesy of Lab Coast. They've got a bit more of a lo-fi thing going on and the vocals are more prominent and a bit distorted. They're equally summery and catchy, though. With two tracks from each band you could do a lot worse than this. Right now Faux Discx really do seem to have their finger on the button as far as garage pop goes.

YELLOW marks the return of Calgary’s Friendo (featuring Michael Wallace of Women) who’s songs Basement Fever described as “woozy, reverberating jams spanning all kind of genres and influences (you can hear bits of punk, 60s-style pop, and an experimental, noisy edge) are all kinds of ace.” Which pretty much hits the nail on the head. They share the wax with their Canadian compadres Lab Coast who present their garage indie low in fidelity and high in hooks. Kinda like pop music beamed to a radio placed in the middle of a corn field on a sunny day. Something like that.
