Joker. Not just a clever name. No, I've really not understood anything this guy's done bar that amazing track on the Hyperdub five year anniversary compilation which was much moodier and cooler than this technicolour chart gash he churns out for most other labels. Including this pile of sick 'purple wow' toss that 4AD are bankrolling. Whereas Zomby makes music for heads and feet, this is seemingly for neither. This is what I thought Magnetic Man sounded like! Shit horrid vocodered vocal saying "Let Me Take You Out" over a stunted technicolour abortion of a backing track, beats that stutter and thud, irritating synths that wank off into nothing....If it had, say, Katy B singing over it I could probably just about cope. Then again she would probably have injected a bit of velocity and groove to it rather than just this flaccid dick of a track. I can't even bear to flip it over and I'm certainly not looking forward to the album...sorry!
· Stepping out of the shadows in 2007 when just sixteen years old,
Joker’s stock has risen dramatically since.
· Aided by him releasing defining cuts like ‘Digidesign’, ‘The Vision (Let
Me Breathe)’ and ‘Tron’, he now finds himself thick in midst of the
recent resurgence of British electronic music.
· With the world travelled and a deal with 4AD signed, he’s finally
ready to appease his waiting public and release his debut album, ’The
Vision’.
· His now trademark instrumentals have been augmented by a number
of vocal collaborations, including contributions from fellow rising stars
like Jessie Ware and Buggsy, making the album one that’s been
worth the wait.
· Prior to this, two new tracks 'Here Come The Lights' and ‘My Trance
Girl’, are being released as a double A-side 12”.
· Following on from the Radio 1 and 1Xtra playlisting ‘The Vision
(Let Me Breathe)’, both stations gave 'Here Come The Lights' its
first play, firstly in the coveted Hottest Record In The World spot on
Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show, which was quickly followed by MistaJam
spinning it on their sister station.
· It highlights the young producer’s maturing sound, continuing to
playfully subvert pop conventions.
· The track also features a bombastic and memorable vocal
performance from Silas from Turboweekend.
· On the flip, 'My Trance Girl' is a futuristic six-minute instrumental,
more in line with what first hooked Joker fans; its muscular vintage-
Sega aping synths and sharp drum snaps a nod to his roots in
Bristol's fecund dance music scene.
