Not the Howard Hughes of course, or the one played by Stanley Lebor in vastly underrated 80's sitcom 'Ever Decreasing Circles', or the one that used to play piano with The Associates but the one from Coming Soon, a French band. David Tattersall of course is the man from the Wave Pictures and a man who as I never tire of saying, single handedly ruined a Daniel Johnston gig at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds with his godawful guitar twiddling. The twiddling appears here too which is a shame as otherwise its a nice album of laid back Jonathan Richman-esque pop. Second track 'He Can See Her' sounds unnervingly like The Feelies offshoot Yung Wu's naive pop gem 'Shore Leave'. The title track 'The Lobster Boat' again is an excellent wiry piece of guitar pop coming on like early Talking Heads or Television shot through with a peculiarly British kind of seaside melancholy. At times they come on like an English take on the Mountain Goats and therefore it comes as no surprise that there's a cover of said nasal folkers late on. Otherwise its a nice package of literate acoustic pop, lovingly wrapped in a sleeve of a painting by David's mum.
DAVID TATTERSALL, frontman, singer, songwriter and guitarist from the splendid WAVE PICTURES has teamed up with HOWARD HUGHES from French popsters COMING SOON on THE LOBSTER BOAT, an album of folk acoustics, indie classics, and soft rocking HITS, all wrapped up in a painting by his mum. Like his first solo album, THE LOBSTER BOAT is a limited edition vinyl only release, including a digital download. Praise for David’s first solo album HAPPY FOR A WHILE: “lovely, lonely outsider pop that would be perfectly complemented by dark nights, red wine and contemplation of long journeys homewards.”SOUNDS XP // “ first-person paeans to mysterious girls where the hidden depth to the apparently meaningless is reinforced by repetition and emphasis on the simple things that mean the most… like dear old Jonathan Richman taught us”. THE JOY COLLECTIVE // “… this record is bloody brilliant.” SONGS BY TOAD // "The Wave Pictures are all about guitarist and singer David Tattersall, a waspish naif who wears his heart on his ragged sleeve. They owe a certain debt to the Smiths, and Tattersall has Morrissey's knack of marrying the ridiculous and the sublime in an exquisite, tautly turned phrase" The Guardian.
