Pink Reason - Manchester '11

Manchester '11 by Pink Reason

3...according to our on Thu 25 Aug, 2011.

Shoplifting maestro and once grower of highly potent weed Kevin Debroux's (AKA Pink Reason) new collection of strung out "vibes" and "songs" are scratchy, laid back affairs that have no discernible starting points and are the kind of tracks that you might listen to if you spent the night getting high on glue and other ace solvents. His voice (a sparse croaky drawl) is set against a singular jangly guitar that has a touch of reverb. It reminds me of a stripped back Velvet Underground...with less quality and more drug ingestion. This tape was recorded at a show in Madchestah earlier this year...through a pair of underpants and a shitty boom box. It's proper no-fi, as one of the guys in the office just said...and I would have to agree. The songs are simple style compositions that have no complex solos or any of that gubbins, it's just disarming, and brutally honest sounding music. The vocals are unrelentingly bleak sounding, a lone light in a dark sea type thing, while the crude recording style lends a dingy feel to the music. It's quite an honest sounding record that's devoid of pretension...and talent!! (OH!!) Just kidding!! I reckon this guy is quite a talent and this low fidelity tape is a example of that...

Limited run of just 50 c34 tapes with individual hand-painted covers. Six woeful, crunching, stretched-out songs capturing the solo Kevin DeBroux last November in Manchester (including a scrappy, punk-as-fuck trudge through The Stooges' 'TV Eye'). The lo-fidelity recording perfectly marries with DeBroux's approach, which recalls '80s Eastern European hardcore as much as it does Graham Jeffries as much as it does the contemporary freak-folk vibe. As essential as it is rare, don't miss out.
