Our single of the week (25th August 2011)
...according to our Mike on Thu 25 Aug, 2011.
This right here is the first in a series of 7"s being put out be Emerald Cocoon focusing on recordings by today's more interesting solo artists. I dunno if she's too accomplished with her solo stuff for her past work to still be mentioned in every review but here's Charalambides's Christina Carter offering up a couple of focused and minimal little jams, with drawn out a capella vocals accompanied only by twinkling chimes in the background. It's a strange and heady mix of sensuality and spirituality, with Carter keening long drawn-out vocal meditations that really take you somewhere interesting. It's got a pretty spooky feel to it, this one, but the atmospheres it creates are undeniably palpable and if you're a fan of CC's previous work this'll make for a welcome addition to your collection.
A new 7" by Christina Carter which serves as the opening ceremony for our new 7" series of solo performances 'Alone Together'. A loan voice, the tangled bells, the caw of a crow, a plane passing overhead… A fortuitous overlapping of sound moments, trapped in amber by Christina for us to bear witness. Much like her early CDRs 'Hand & Mind' or 'Human As Guitar', 'Obelisk/Tholos' is an act of white witchcraft, a healing spell that defines time with the merest of tools: bells, voice, a microphone… Mastered by Pete Swanson, Edition of 300.
