Mogwai. Not just an animal of mysterious origin that you shouldn't feed after midnight, but also a band that have - like the Gremlins - undergone changes (but not because you might have spilt water on them). They have evolved somewhat, long gone is the shredding riffery of their previous works. It (on this EP anyway) has been replaced by lush sounding string arrangements that are more like Craig Armstrong rather than ermmm...Riff Armstrong(?) It doesn't sound too bad, though. In fact it sounds pretty fine. It's sort of baroque rock. It has loads of space this EP and it has texture and shade in equal measure. It starts off in haunting fashion with the epic sounding "Get To France", which has a nice guitar motif and full sounding orchestration. The rest of the EP sounds quality too. My favourite track is the EP closer, "Does This Always Happen?" which is an unbelievably emotive sounding track, it has a really great sounding string motif and it's a proper heartstring tugger. I nearly wept while listening to it...then I realised that I'd forgotten to put any trousers on and my tears were from merely chaffing my botty cheeks on the uncomfortable office upholstery. You try...you do what you can... The rest of the EP has enough moments of beauty and darkness to warrant a purchase...FROM YOU!!!
