Xiu Xiu - Daphny

Daphny by Xiu Xiu

The newest Xiu Xiu single features one original (‘Daphny’) along with an earnest cover of the Rihanna hit, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’.

‘Daphny’ charts the real-life nightmare experienced by a friend of Xiu Xiu singer Jamie Stewart, who - following an arrest for shoplifting - was raped by an officer while in police custody. The song is an attempt to give support, to accuse and most of all to live in spite of life. It is the first song new members Zac Pennington, Sam Mickens and Jamie Stewart have written collectively.

The cover of ‘Only Girl’ was inspired by a night at lesbian bar Steele Blue, watching all the southern ladies going crazy on the dancefloor when the song dropped. A dissonant string quartet backed by an undeniable dance beat, the gender-bend of the cover is furthered with a quote from Detroit Grand Pubahs’ song ‘Sandwiches’, a song beloved by Stewart for its unintended gender screw - one that is just as filthy as Rihanna’s.

Limited to 100 copies in the UK on light blue vinyl.

Both songs are exclusive to this release.
