Oooh this is good. On the Animal Collective's Paw Tracks imprint we have a man who used to go under the name Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele. Here he comes across like an exciting lo-fi take on Gruff Rhys's solo output and let's face it that last album was a little dull in places. This is anything but dull. A summer blast of lopsided indie pop with the very in vogue Ariel Pink production values beneath a corker of a tune, no weirdness, no messing about. Simple, classic. The B side is like a Toro Y Moi who has finally realised he's getting a little too close to Jamiroquai for comfort and has returned to his lo-fidelity roots. Excellent.
Dent May recorded "Fun" and "Wedding Day" at Hits Inc, his home studio at the infamous Cats Purring Dude Ranch in Oxford, Mississippi.
Expanding upon the smooth pop sound he introduced on last year's "That Feeling" / "Eastover Wives" single on Forest Family, Dent ditches his ukulele in favor of cosmic synths, funky guitars, analog drum machines, loopy bass lines, and massive vocal harmonies.
This is his second release on Paw Tracks, who put out his debut LP "The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele" in 2009. The 7" will be pressed on clear vinyl in a limited edition run, and a tour only cassette single will be limited to 100 copies.
