Cauterised - Trifler Vs The 70's

Here we've got a mega-limited (only 20 made!!) CDr of Caretaker-style plunderphonics from Cauterised. It comes in a super cute handmade little cloth pouch, which is a nice touch. As for the songs, he's been going through his archives and finding a mix of '70s cuts - largely tropicalia and soundtrack pieces I think, although I guess the joy of such records is that there aren't really any restrictions besides the ones you impose on yourself. There's some lovely (church?) organ tones running through 'Dracula', for example. It's not in thrall to '70s rock heroics or anything like that, more like being haunted by the brown-and-green nylon ghost of all those parts of the decade that everyone else has long-forgotten. Sometimes the samples are looped, sometimes they're buried under mog and furk until the decay is as audible as the music itself. The wibbling and crackling of the source material is part of the charm here though, of course, and it makes for a fascinating listen. Surprisingly accessible for something on such a short run, too. At these numbers with packaging like this they'd sell even if the music sucked, so it's a relief to be able to tell you it doesn't. I'm especially enjoying the reapeato-funk of the brass-and-drum-heavy 'What's In The Box?', a heady mix of experimentalism and good old-fashioned fun.
