Another top quality, album length release, the 21st in FatCat’s highly acclaimed Split Series sees two artists using layered rhythms and vocals in very different ways.
Foot Village are key proponents of the Los Angeles DIY scene centered around The Smell (No Age, Abe Vigoda). Their brilliant live performances are compelling, energetic spectacles, using no amplifiers, just a circle of drums and vocals.
Super Khoumeissa are a stunning Malian dance group. Whilst this is their first release, they have found fans in Animal Collective, who invited the band to play at their ATP Festival in May this year. Super Khoumeissa’s folk- based music is hugely popular in the North of Mali and its rhythms have transferred into much of their contemporary music - audible in the music of such artists as Tinariwen, Khaira Arby, Tartit, and Tamikrest.
Foot Village will perform at Portishead’s All Tomorrow’s Parties in July (UK), and will tour UK / Europe around this release.
Foot Village press quotes: “Anarchic percussive throw down for the cosmic disco of the mind” – Mojo; “Hair- raisingly direct, with drums of absolute death, Foot Village are instantly mesmerizing” – Rock Sound; “Wholly unhinged and chaotically great” – Vice; “Who would've thought that blunt drums and vocals could sound so f*cking brutal? So f*cking vital?” – Drowned In Sound.
