Blasted Canyons - Blasted Canyons

Blasted Canyons by Blasted Canyons

4...according to our on Thu 07 Jul, 2011.

Raucous sounding garage rock from these self confessed chongers. I actually thought the 'Yons were gonna be a bit more psych or summat. I reckon they have a touch of Times New Viking about them, which is no bad thing. They are more visceral than the Viking lads. They have such an unhinged sound, as a band on Jon Dwyer's record label should. They can be thrust into the same ballpark as Thee Oh Sees as they seem to share the same crazed pop sensibilities...if it squawks and thuds...use it!! They are a three piece that all play different instruments at any given time, yet there doesn't seem to be a weak moment on this record. All the playing seem to be very strong. As do the songs that are in turn psychedelic and garagey and even have slight progressive elements. Almost all of the cuts here have a real direct approach and you can almost feel the sweat and effort flying off the protagonists. It starts quite quietly does this record, then explodes into life, and by the time its over you'll find yourself sweaty and breathless and drunk on the power and sonics of the 'Yons. This is a real rock and roll album with great energy and lashings of sass (who says "sass" anymore!?!). These guys will no doubt be tearing up a stage pretty soon near you...be sure to catch them as they sound pretty fucking awesome. An exciting prospect and promising debut...Ohh!!

BLASTED CANYONS is HEATHER FEDEWA, ADAM FINKEN and MATT JONES. Heather and Matt initially started the band to play an art opening at MoMa which ended with everyone getting kicked out. Matt met Adam handing out mushrooms on the 4th of July and together they convinced a crew of similarly fucked up strangers to light fireworks off the roof. Together, they round robin instruments and crush huge riffs, singalongs, caveman drums, and gooey synthesisers into thrashy wizard rock for weirdos that dig dorky shit but aren't total dorks about it. Their self titled debut was recorded with MATT HARTMAN (of HENRY' DRESS and SIC ALPS fame) and ERIC BAUER (who has helmed the boards for Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and countless other San Francisco ne'er do wells) and carries the ramshackle blessing of being released on JOHN DWYER and BRIAN LEE HUGHES' Castle Face Records, with original art by Castle Face resident art-slayer WILLIAM KEIHN
