Jackals are possibly one of the leading lights right now for gritty, sludgy punk in the UK. After selling out their debut six-song 7” vinyl ep, the band return with 2 new numbers here – the lurching, lumbering hateful ‘After Tonight/I Care For No One’ and the thrashing, two-stepping, solo-infused ‘Mob Mentality’. This is the first out of a set of 3 split 7”s for Jackals this year.
Londons Self Loathing, whose debut gig was supporting none other than Ceremony, spew forth four tracks that only just creep over one-minute each. Each song wastes no time in smashing you around the face with riff after fucking riff. Chug, thrash, blast, smash, kill them all.
Along with acts such as Closure, Lich, Grazes, Cthulhu Youth, Witch Cult these bands provide a stunning example of how strong the UK underground punk scene is right now. With a bit of dirt under its collective fingernails, this is some of the most exciting heavy music around – no overt machismo, no haircuts – just raging tunes for all!
