Lady with harp alert. We have reports of another lady with a harp releasing a record on Drag City. This lady, is not, I repeat not Joanna Newsom. Is she a fraudster, a charlatan, a trickster?? Is she Mum of Newsom? Nah, not really - this is one of those lovingly re-released early 70's cult faves that DC seem to have made the passionate re-issuing of their forte. There's not a great deal I can say about this incredibly pretty, sunny & positive folk record that hasn't been covered by the press release. Carol has a high lively voice that does almost touch on the ethereal and her arrangements are jaunty, dreamy & cheerful odes to the beauty & vitality of life. This music is far too pure & ecstatic to have anything but itself to speak for it. She's probably actually a little too happy for much of my personal listening tastes (hahaha, what a miserable sod I am) but if that's taken as any kind of criticism then surely I am a horrible, hateful retard, not a lover of music. And this music is demanding to be loved, another life-affirming explosion from the continually rewarding canon of Drag City. Archive folk at it's most hearty, some of the harp paying on here is quite transcendental!!
Thirty-five years after Carol Kleyn first started hawking her records at fairs and on kaleidoscopic street corners, Drag City are now proud and privileged to give ‘Love Has Made Me Stronger’ a full release on CD, LP, and digital formats.
The sound of ‘Love Has Made Me Stronger’ is a sound of joy. Carol Kleyn’s music is clearly meant to express love and happiness, desire and wonder, and Carol lets her voice communicate this as she’s done at countless shows with only a single accompanying instrument - harp in the early part of the record, keyboards on the second half.
Ardent listeners may compare Carol Kleyn to West Coast singers of the era such as Joni Mitchell and Essra Mohawk, but it is Drag City’s belief that Carol was singing a sound not just her own, but a sound that expressed the time and place that changed so many lives back then.
Carol’s ethereal voice dances over her harp and keyboard arrangements as she sings her dreamy odes to nature, love and living with a full and open heart.
