Runners - Starting Line

Our single of the week (5th August 2011)

Starting Line by Runners

5...according to our on Thu 04 Aug, 2011.

I've heard a lot of talk about this single in the weeks preceding its arrival so it's great to finally have it spinning here. It sounds great! This is the debut release from Runners, who are of course our very own Business Lady's synth band, so obviously I've been following their progress pretty closely and going to their gigshows and that. It's great to hear this stuff properly recorded and pressed on vinyl. A very slick recording it is too. On the first side we've got 'Starting Line', with mega-produced drums fizzing and popping over thudding synth bass, simple repetitive melodies and cosmic drones. Totally danceable stuff with some sweet sweet tones. That's what these guys excel at, really - enveloping hypnotic pop with uplifting synth textures for maximum chong potential. There's a wacky Talking-Heads-on-meth type vocal line towards the end about how cool everything is, and then there's a version on the other side without it. And then another shorter song for good measure that's a bit less slickly produced and sounds more like a performance recording. This one's a right old head-nodder too. Ace.

New release on Dummy from fresh new live krautrock/disco outfit RUNNERS.

Runners hail from the city of Leeds. Spawned from the ashes of Three One G/Skin Graft obsessed no wave quartet Tigers! (Hairy Hairy Fist!) and skronky jazz party trio Chops (Upset The Rhythm).

Starting Line was recorded by Grant Henderson at Loom Studios and mixed by Steven Whitfield. B side feat. an instrumental version of Starting Line and Pulsar Quasar, which Jeff T Smith (a.k.a Juffage) recorded at Loom Studios.

Runners will be playing regularly over the summer in support of the EP performing at various festivals inc. Beacons, The Grand Obscene Baby Auction (Bradford) and Tramlines fest in Sheffield.

Super limited to 150 copies.
