Ah, a new Woods single. This is always a treat. Apparently these two tracks were written and recorded alongside their recent 'Sun and Shade' album, so I guess this is a companion piece of sorts. On the first side we've got 'Find Them Empty', a classic Woods slacker-pop gem with some abrasive high-gain guitar soloing all over it. Flip it over and there's 'Be There', a longer, slower, atmospheric piece of smoky, minimalist folk with the trademark Woods falsetto and some weird fuzz-guitar-and-trumpet bits. As far as I know it's their first release on the perennially interesting Sacred Bones imprint, too. Total label-hoppers, these guys. Everyone wants to put them out. Not their best release in my opinion, certainly not a starting point for people unfamiliar with their albums (you should start with the practically flawless 'Songs of Shame', 'At Echo Lake' or 'At Rear House'), but solid nonetheless.
Last two albums received Best New Music & Album of the Year awards on Pitchfork. For fans of Bobb Trimble, Beach Boys, Grateful Dead. As a companion piece to their new full length, Sun and Shade, this single was recorded in the winter of 2011 at Buttermilk Falls in Warwick, NY. Woods have gracefully risen to the top of their class by crafting intricate nostalgic, experimental pop songs that are unforgettable. The A-side, “Find Them Empty,” is far less falsetto and way more Bobb Trimble than any of their previous work. The B-side, “Be There,” is a more jam-friendly number reminiscent of their legendary live shows. Woods will be touring the US all summer and have a UK tour planned for September. The cover of this single features a young version of label-owner Caleb Braaten, his father, and a gigantic marijuana plant. Enjoy!
