Samiyam - Sam Baker's Album

Sam Baker's Album by Samiyam

4...according to our on Fri 24 Jun, 2011.

First clock this guy's material when he made his Hyperdub debut back in 2008. Sine then releases have been fairly few and far between, keeping the quality control high. This is the second album for his right hand man and fellow L.A dweller Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label and it's dropped just in time for the summer heat. Seventeen tracks strong, many of them under two minutes long/short. But that's fine by me as they're all well realised with some heavy disjointed beats that always maintain a sort of awkward groove. Twisted funk that doesn't become too messed up like a lot of electronic/IDM flavoured hip hop did in the early 2000s. I'm assuming he likes to get busy with the MPC for his beat constructions and he does throw in a fair amount of samples from funk, soul, soundtracks, bits of dialogue, etc. but nothing too cluttered, letting the beats breathe and those trademark LA style synths do the talking.

Brainfeeder's most highly anticipated album this year; a series of stand alone, quality instrumentals - each one an individual work of art.

Samiyam is one of the original members of Brainfeeder, and was the first release on the label's inception in 2008.

A forerunner of the LA beat sound that swept the global underground, Samiyam was largely hailed as a worthy partner of label boss Flying Lotus

Has previously released with labels including Hyperdub and Poo Bah.

"Hip Hop beats filled with snippets of Soul, Funk, 70's Italian horror flick soundtracks, Nintendo bonus level music, and 90's Hip Hop. Somehow, with this much content, the beats still manage to sound gloriously minimal and disjointed" - Dazed and Confused.
