Ford And Lopatin - Emergency Room

Our single of the week (10th June 2011)

Emergency Room by Ford And Lopatin

4...according to our on Thu 09 Jun, 2011.

This is a pretty little thing. The new Ford and Lopatin single is a picture disc 12" that comes in four different variations. They're all pretty similar, though, so I'm not sure I'd recommend shelling out the full fifty-six smackers for the set...the only variation between them is a different X-ray picture on the B-sides. Musically, we've got three different versions of the song 'Emergency Room', which is a highlight of their very cool new LP. On side A we've got the album cut at 45rpm, which is a smooth, twitchy, criminally catchy NY synthpop number that makes you wonder why more people aren't doing that Scritti Politti sound these days. On the flip we switch to 33 and start out with a dub from The Bug. It's pretty deep but somewhat unrecognisable...still, it had Phil drumming on his legs in a tribal fashion a minute ago so, y'know...that's followed by a pretty chilled out extended mix by Gavin Russom which is much closer to the original, but with more of a laid back techno vibe going on. The mixes are worthy and interesting enough, but let's face it, the value of a single is all in how classy the A-side is, and this one's a belter.

Ford & Lopatin’s ‘Emergency Room’ is a digitized mixture of New York influence in an upfront, original format: a thick groove for the computer-poppers, dissonant No Wave guitar and synth wails for the proto-punks, and hazy, heartbreaking keys for abstract lap dancers. Over and between all this tweaked vocals float calmly, delivering one of the catchiest melodies in recent pop history. As the first single from their forthcoming album Channel Pressure, ‘Emergency Room’ is pumping, twitchy and simply addictive.

On the flip, notorious analogue synth wizard Gavin Russom (DFA Records) provides a remix, alongside a heavily medicated, totally essential dub edit from The Bug. Retaining its post-punk roots into the future ‘Emergency Room’ will be released as a strictly limited edition vinyl X-ray picture disc.
