Blown Realms And Stalled Explosions by Enablers

The Enablers have always been a fantastic band both live and in the studio and new album 'Blown Realms And Stalled Explosions' was never going be an exception to that rule. Much like Baltimore's Lungfish, The Enablers have crafted a unique sound from the interplay of spoken word narratives and tight jazz influenced post-rock jams. The band themselves are dynamic, ultra-tight and insanely consistent in their approach. The music fluctuates between melodic subtlety and outright rhythmical dynamics at the click of a stick and proves that, with the addition of Doug Scharin (June Of 44, HIM, Mice Parade) on drums they are now the last great reminder of post-rock's past glories. Vocalist Pete Simonelli's spoken word poetry sits calmly within the music making casual, intimate observations in his wry husky Chicago drawl. His voice reminds me of many others (Waits, Brian McMahan, Gil Scott Heron, Johnny Cash) but still maintains an instantly identifiable and ultimately appealing delivery. This really takes me back. Great record.

Since the 2004 release of their first LP, End Note (Neurot Recordings), Enablers have established a new direction in spoken word music. The prose and poetry of Pete Simonelli is intricately woven into the dynamic interplay of guitarists Joe Goldring and Kevin Thomson, and punctuated by the compulsive and precise drumming of Doug Scharin. Musically, the compositions range from melodic minimalism to heavy, rhythmically challenging thickets ofsound.

Following End Note came Output Negative Space (Neurot Recordings) and Tundra (Exile on Mainstream) as well as two EP? featuring extended improvisations (The Achievement on Awesome Vistas and Now You Can Answer My Prayers on Lancashire and Somerset). With an almost entirely DIY approach to touring and intense live performances, Enablers continually reach a growing number of fans in the underground of the European continent and the UK.

Their new release, Blown Realms and Stalled Explosions (Exile On Mainstream + Lancashire and Somerset Dance Society), finds Enablers evolving even more. The record's textural and evocative sound realises a new direction while maintaining the distinct elements of musicianship and imagination that made the previous releases so engaging. Blown Realms and Stalled Explosions is a record that, simply put, is a great listen.
