Ty Segall - Goodbye Bread

Ty Segall's newie is a farewell to '80s comedy classic "Bread" in which a family of lovable Liverpudlians try to make their way through the veritable minefield that was Thatcher's Britain. Who knew that this show would have such an impact on both sides of the Atlantic. It must have left an imprint on this San Franciscan for he has composed an album that references the characters and their tribulations. Wonder at the ode to relationships ('Lilo Lil has Stole Me Man') chortle at the soon to be classic ditty based on Grandad ('Grandad Boswell Stinks of Fish') and who could forget the overbearing ballad ('Joey Boswell's Leather Pants Are A Chafin'')...I'm joking of course. This new release from Monsieur Segall sounds great and has nowt to do with Carla Lanes fondly remembered BBC comedy caper. Segall has evolved over the years as his sound has. I used to think he was a kind of shady Springsteen/Neil Young hybrid. Not any more. I reckon he now has more in common with John Lennon. His vocal hooks and stomping rhythms remind me greatly of the former Beatle. The first song sounds like Lennon quite a lot, which is no bad thing. The whole thing definitely has a real retro feel. It's quite mid-tempo seventies rock and sounds pretty sweet. The production is garagey and has a scratchy feel that is velly intlesting Mr. Bond. All of the songs wouldn't sound out of place on a seventies rock movie soundtrack. It has elements of Glam and slacker rock. It's an album that is full of great songs and surprises. Special Guest star Vic Morrow as Butch McGee the hottest producer in Tinseltown. A strong record and no obvious dip in form from Ty Segall...
