Good to see the Fens getting involved in the whole drifting ambient electro acoustic scene. I've always been a hill man myself but having recently moved to the flatlands of North Yorkshire I'm attempting to get used to not being able to see over the brow of a hill. Good for cycling though. Anyway GS is an artist residing in rural Cambridgeshire who produces a lovely ambient pieces based on a slow motion pulse with added dronescapes which gives way to acoustic strums and picked nylon strung Spanish guitar. As with a lot of ambient music it's difficult to say what it is that makes this special, it just evokes a time and mood which is incredibly moving. I'm reminded a little of Celer's evocative work and at times of Northerner's fingerpicked ambience. The third track delves further into noise territory and as the album wears on it becomes less pretty and more frayed around the edges with cut up voice and synth drone added to the mood of eerie calm. A fine debut effort from a new label in lovely handmade packaging. Strictly limited to 100 copies.
Clocking in at a little over 30 minutes Sutra is a contrasting and meditative journey through varied shifts in instrumentation and ideas that merge to form an evolving and exciting soundscape. Sutra navigates the ponderous flow of an isolated temple in Nepal - incorporating sedate reverberations, insightful acoustic-electro guitar, experimental pulses, secretive field recordings and harmonious feedback.
Available as a compact disc in a limited hand made and numbered edition of 100 copies only.
