Sightings - Future Accidents

Well, apparently this band have been going for years and years and earned love from the likes of Thurston Moore and Andrew WK but this is the first time I've sat down and properly listened to them. The first side of this record is noisy music, nasty-sounding but not incoherent. There's a lot of space on the record, but when things happen they're clangy and grating. Tone-wise they remind me a lot of Big Black or maybe the Birthday Party, lots of uncompromisingly crunchy distortion on everything and then really clean, trebly, minimal drums. There's shades of Suicide in places here too, particularly in Mark Morgan's guitar delivery but also in the repetitive grooves and synth tones - however with this band the crackles and distortion are laid on thick and the drumming is live and loose as hell. It's good to hear composed music that sounds this unpredictable and jarring, which I would presume is the intention here. This entire record is comprised of four tracks, three of which make up the first side, with the fourth occupying the duration of side B. The second side is a slow instrumental number with lots of pulses and throbs rubbing up against this crackling, decaying static that sounds like a campfire. It's a bit like the ambient noise soundtrack for some really scary computer game.
