A Melvins live album...with the dudes from Big Business...together at last. As Chandler (from Friends not the hard-boiled crime novelist) would say "could it be any more rocking?" The answer to that question is a resounding yes. The godfathers of grunge/metal wont be denied. I reckon they should be inaugurated in the Rock Hall of Fame. I reckon the Melvins are a true metal band. None of this PABHs shit. They scare and delight in equal measure as they always have. There is no compromise. Even the more recent stuff which is arguably more accessible and more in the vein of classic rock kicks the asses of almost all modern rock acts. This live album is amazing. It sounds absolutely gigantic. The Big Business lads have added a truly great dimension to the band. Almost every song has moments of epic wonder. It's a live album which has a few classics built around more recent offerings. The band sound so tight it's just insane!! The sound quality is fantastic too, all the instruments rumble and enthrall in equal measure. Unlike a lot of live albums, where the singer/frontman will give a shout out to wherever and say stuff like "...we're glad to be here...thanks for coming out...blah blah blah...yadda yadda yadda...", the Melvins eschew any of that rock star bollocks and just concentrate on causing huge chasms in the very crust of the earth. At any given moment I can look around the office and see righteous rock faces being pulled by any of the lads in sight. These guys are genuine rock monsters and any rock fan worth his salt should seek out this album...Standout moment for me..the brooding, ominous "Eye Flys", which could be used as the soundtrack to your darkest nightmares. Unbridled musical genius from genuine legends....OHHHHH!!!
