Amon Tobin - ISAM

ISAM by Amon Tobin

4...according to our on Fri 20 May, 2011.

I'm reviewing this from a promo CD copy. Man you gotta love the extent that labels go to these days to prevent piracy - our promo copy is apparently watermarked and traceable with a unique ID code and it has a funny warning sticker on it. It is necessary though because I may well be tempted to upload the upfront audio to the internet thus reducing our own potential sales which would threaten my job/therefore my family's financial security. Thank god these warnings and measures are in place, shit last time I got hold of a shotgun I lost three toes. Let's face it though, Ninja Tune have been around for a while and know the score with offering a high quality product (180g vinyl 12"s + download at super reasonable price-tags) vs someone just grabbing a torrent. And so this latest opus from longtime label stalwart is being presented in lush 2CD lavish book style package and 2LP + download. Honestly with so many artists being malleable towards certain trends, whether it be dubstep or hypnagogic pop or whatever, this chap since the early days has been evolving his own vision of electronic music and it just gets better every time. His sound designing skills are right up there as always (post Mike Dred/Peter Green - Virtual Farmer). Tobin is well under-rated in this field. I reckon he has proven time and time again that he has both skills and "tunes". Some complex stuff happening right here coupled with more innocent sorta eastern European processed folk elements and twisted string manipulations. Hats off.

· A massive priority for Ninja Tune in 2011. Amon Tobin has a colossal fanbase and
has sold over half a million records. ‘ISAM’ is his most ambitious work to date.

· Brand new, large scale audio visual live show experience debuting in the UK at The
Roundhouse in London, designed by award winning V Squared Labs founder Vello
(Jay-Z, Beyonce, Korn).

· A collaborative audio / visual installation ‘Control Over Nature’, with Saatchi Collection
artist Tessa Farmer, begins in May at The Crypt Gallery in London and then travels to
Berlin, Paris and North America later in the year.

· All ‘ISAM’ artwork is based on Tessa Farmer's sculptures. Available on CD and deluxe
vinyl with printed inner sleeves.

· ‘ISAM’ will also be available in a very special limited edition (4000 copies for the
world) featuring a full colour 10” by 7” hardback book in a black cloth finish, with the
CD album nestling in the back sleeve. The limited edition version of the album also
includes an exclusive bonus track. The book features exclusive images of Amon Tobin
and Tessa Farmer’s ‘ISAM’ collaborative installation. These images, shot by Pelle
Crepin, will not be available anywhere else in the ‘ISAM’ series. The package also
includes an essay written by long standing music journalist, founder and editor of
‘The Quietus’, John Doran. His two thousand word essay delves deep in to the
themes surrounding the collaboration and includes in-depth interviews from both
Amon Tobin and Tessa Farmer on the project.

· Amon recently had his tracks interpreted and performed by the London Metropolitan
Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, and his music has been used in association with
productions and brands such as ‘Sin City’, BMW, ‘Spider-Man’, ‘The Matrix’, ‘The
Italian Job’, ‘25th Hour’, Toyota and Lexus, amongst others.

· He has also provided full scores for ‘Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory’ (video game),
‘Infamous’ (video game), ‘Taxidermia’ (feature film directed by Gyorgy Palfi), ‘Pina’
(feature film) by Wim Wenders and ‘The Gift’ (short) by Carl Rinsch.

seductive beauty…” – NME; “Fiendishly dense and darkly evocative” - The Guardian;
“A quantum leap into unknown territory…” – The Wire; “Bewitching” - The Times;
