Friendly Fires - Pala

Pala by Friendly Fires

2...according to our on Thu 12 May, 2011.

Innovative, unexpected, futuristic. Just three words that can be used to describe the CD case - the CD pops out the top! Amazing. Unfortunately the music within sounds something like a Stock, Aitken and Waterman produced Curiosity Killed the Cat album. Uber commercial polished rave p(l)op. The thanks list on the sleeve is phenomenal-  I've never met that many people in my whole life! Special thanks to Phil Collins for the syn-drum idea and Jamiroquai for guest scatting. There's a certain catchiness to some of the choruses which unveils some melodic sensibilities but overall its a brash modern technicolour pop album but a horribly soulless one. Not for me I guess.

· St Albans trio Friendly Fires are delighted to announce
the release of their second album ‘Pala’, on XL
Recordings.

· Named after the island in Aldous Huxley’s 1962 novel
‘Island’, ‘Pala’ has been produced by a mixture of
Friendly Fires themselves and Paul Epworth.

· The album was recorded over the past twelve months
in various locations including London, St. Albans, Rye
in Sussex, Yvetot in France, and New York.

· It’s set to build on the success of Friendly Fires’
eponymous debut album that was released in
September 2008 and went on to sell over 200,000
copies in the UK, picking up a Mercury Prize
nomination and two Brit Awards nominations along
the way.

· The artwork for ‘Pala’ features a beautiful parrot
photograph from one of famed fashion photographer
Sølve Sundsbø’s personal projects, while the album
also sees musical collaborations with The Harlem
Gospel Choir (on ‘Hurting’) and Holy Ghost’s Alex
Frankel (who plays Clavinet on ‘True Love’) .

· The first single from the album is ‘Live Those Days
Tonight’. Radio 1’s Zane Lowe will broadcast the world
exclusive first play of the track.

· Friendly Fires performed ‘Live Those Days Tonight’ on
TV for the first time on NBC’s Jimmy Fallon show .
