Split by Cheval Sombre/ Spectrum

4...according to our on Wed 27 Apr, 2011.

We forgot to put these new Great Pop Supplement 7"s down for pre-order - probably my fault - so if you've bought them elsewhere and already know all about them you can ignore these words. I couldn't review the Damon & Naomi one because Damon's demented boffin hair totally freaked me out & he actually looks just like a corpse re-animated whereas the willowy Naomi, who I've never really thought particularly about before has blossomed into a very beautiful woman indeed! That's the sleeve for the other single reviewed then. This one can review itself. The Spectrum side is everything you want. Prime Stereolab/Neu/Spacemen 3 heavenly motorik bliss! I think bands like Holy fuck & Eat Lights Become Lights should lick Kember's boots for all eternity. NY's Cheval Sombre don't hit the mark quite so much for me. This is a Sonic Boom mix adds all manner of cosmic fairy dust to what is essentially a meandering, stunted acoustic ballad. His voice sounds too high in the mix but the underlying effects are fucking astonishing. If I could put this through a mixing desk & just remove the song (which to be fair, is perfectly pleasant, if not a little wistful) and crank those whooshing UFO sounds up to the max....then I'd be a happy man indeed. All said & done this is a great single.

The second of this month’s new 45s on The GPS sees a stunning split 45, pairing Sonic Boom’s Spectrum with New York’s Cheval Sombre.

The Spectrum side sees a debut airing for the full length version of live favourite “Mary”, previously released as a nagging teaser intro / outro to the great “Indian Giver” CD collaboration with Jim Dickinson a couple of years back. A beautiful 7 minute ode to Kraftwerk and Suicide via a passing nod to Stereolab and Neu! that debuts on wax and as a full length take here, exclusively. Put simply, this is just ridiculously awesome….

The reverse side features an exclusive Sonic Boom remix of the wonderful “Red Moon” from the imminent, glorious Cheval full length. New York based Christopher Porpora has previously released some wonderful singles on Static Caravan and Trensmat, leading in turn to a full length release on Dean Wareham’s “Double Feature” label.
Whether one scribe’s term “delicate, druggy, slow core folk” sits true, remains a matter for debate, but either way this has an air of a Nick Drake tune around it, with added Sonic Boom Elektronik impetus…

Released on white vinyl in Ivan Liechti op-art sleeve, this one’s a cert for a hasty selling out…

Kember doesn't wear boots he wears moccasins.
