Walking Backwards / The World's Stongest Man by Damon & Naomi

3...according to our on Wed 27 Apr, 2011.

Here's a little limited lad from those fine characters at The Great Pop supplement, and just in time for record store day too... well, almost. Damon & Naomi have been at it since the disintegration of Galaxie 500 and have produced a slew of excellent singles and EP's in recent years. They write slightly tragic sounding music with candid, sentimental overtones. This 7" sees the return of Michio Kurihara (Ghost / White Heaven) on guitar. He sprinkles some seriously psychedelic magic over these doom ridden ballads and his presence makes all the difference to my enjoyment of the songs. His emotive and sprawling guitar solo's are the highlight of the 7" that's for sure. That said, he's got an excellent platform from which to experiment as these two certainly know what they are doing. Beautiful stuff.

Next up on the GPS, is a beautiful new 45 from Damon & Naomi. I’m sure most of us by now are familiar with the story that as Galaxie 500 disbanded in 1991, the duo embarked upon a career that included a slew of wonderful releases that began with the “Pierre Etoile” EP, before several critically acclaimed full lengths on Sub Pop and their own 20|20|20 label.

“Walking Backwards” acts as a taster for the new album “False Beats and True Hearts” (released in May) and once again features the incredible guitar work of Michio Kurihara (Ghost / White Heaven).

The exclusive B side features a cover of Scott Walker’s “The World’s Strongest Man” from 1969’s “Scott 4” album. Released just in time for Record Store Day 2011, the single is released as a numbered edition of 400 copies, and like most other GPS releases isn’t expected to hang around long…
