Summvs by Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto

4...according to our on Thu 09 Jun, 2011.

I'm fairly sure this is the fifth collaboration between Carsten Nicolai and Yellow Magic Orchestra's Ryuchi Sakamoto. All previous releases have been sublime and as expected this really is no different. What's so lush about their pairing is how they just compliment each other's sound perfectly. Sakamoto's keys are often pure but sometimes slightly processed while Alvo Noto's micro techno sounds shift things to another level entirely. Both artists working respectfully and never taking over proceedings too far in their own direction. Sure this really is fine art but it is also incredibly accessible and melodic at times. Sakamoto's playing is as haunting as ever and there is even a cover of Brian Eno's 'By This River' which is really gorgeous with pinprick sparkling tones and a hint of glitch action. Lovely stuff indeed and a great soundtrack to snoozeville.

On Monday, 09th May 2011, raster-noton. archiv für ton und nichtton will release alva noto + ryuichi sakamoto's latest album summvs, the outcome of an unusual creative partnership between the Oscar-prize honored film composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and the fine artist and electronic music pioneer Carsten Nicolai. The new album will host its world premiere on may 12th, 2011 at the Roundhouse in London and will be followed by a European tour called s in may/june 2011 with stations in Rome, Padua, Graz, Copenhagen, Brussels, Eindhoven, Paris, Frankfurt, Bonn, Berlin, Leipzig and Barcelona. The name of the artists' fifth collaborative album summvs triggers several associations. The title literally combines the latin word 'summa' (engl.: sum) and 'versus' (vs., engl.: opposite), stressing the collaborative idea behind the joint venture of these two exceptional artists, yet stressing their individual potentials. The initials of the five albums – vrioon, insen, revep, utp_ and now summvs – together form the word 'virus', concluding the series with a final infectuous twist
