Bit of a quiet legend is this guy, Laurent Girard. He's been making sublime melodic electronica & sound-art with an organic edge for years, releases for electronische labels colossuses such as Static Caravan, Bad Boy Budgie and My Dad is an Antelope amongst others. The last two may be made up. Flicking through there's plenty of rich sonic detail here. The songs all appear to be miniatures - pieces of incidental music if you like. Melancholic piano rubs up against industrial beats, ricocheting techno disappears into a plumbing vortex, pastoral psychedelic folk will be found curling up next to clickety badminton style liquid glitch & wistful curious electronica ala AFX's tenderest moments is found just lounging around in tiny "song chairs" situated near the central hub of the album. There's plenty here, especially for those who enjoy music in soundtracky snippets. This is one of them & it is another little gem from the hardy Frenchman. I'd like to say stalwart but it's a dreadful word so I won't!
"Coloribus" is a new full length from acoustic electronic pioneer Melodium, released on cd by
Abandon Building in spring 2011. Over the past 12 years Laurent Girard (Melodium
composer/producer) has been one of the most prolific and exciting voices in the realm of folk tinged electronica, with dozens of releases on labels like Static Caravan, Autres Directions, Audio Dregs and others, along with more self releases than you could shake a hand made package at. With a catalog this expansive Girard has explored numerous emotional and musical settings, from melancholic pop to electronic lullabies to noise driven IDM and back. Now for early 2011 Melodium presents an album that brings all these approaches together into one amazing collection.
A great mix tape like album that jumps all over the place but always maintains a cohesive feeling, " Coloribus " displays the variety of styles Melodium can make their own. Genre wise this
is just your average neo-classical/ folktronic hybridization, with a dash of happy/sad indie-pop and
glitchy doom-step thrown in for good measure. Kind of like Max Richter meets Third Eye Foundation or something. The musicianship is top-notch, particularly Girard's emotional piano melodies. The production is minimal but elegant, with simple heart beat like rhythms and crackling electronic texture. Best of all with an average song length of just 120 seconds, there is no noodling or self indulgence. Every track gives its all then gets out of the way, because there is another one right behind it that is just as amazing. Enjoy!
