Mountains, Mountains? Not Black Mountain or Mountain of One or Mount Kimbie, these are just Mountains. I see their name but know not of what they sound like. One of them is Koen Holtcamp who I have heard of. You see, this is a learning curve for me as well - its easy to fall behind with the myriad of new records that fly in each week. What we have are squelchy synths - and lots of them. I'm 10 minutes in and the synths are droning, enveloping the room in a sound which is part Kraftwerk, part Brian Eno and part Tangerine Dream. I know I mention this about some record or other every single bloody week but I'm again reminded of the early Human League instrumental stuff. The old tape hiss is brought in and layered above (or underneath, depending on which way you look at it) the multi tracked churning synth sounds. I read that that these are one of the best selling artists on Thrill Jockey. I can't obviously see what it is they do that so astounds but then I'm no cosmic synth aficionado. It's obvious though that someone is doing something right.
