Various - Soul Jazz presents: Delta Swamp Rock

Soul Jazz presents: Delta Swamp Rock by Various

3...according to our on Thu 28 Apr, 2011.

I was thinking just the other day that a musical genre that really doesn't appeal to me is that which intersects rock, country and soul. As if by magic here we have a compilation of the stuff from the remarkably consistent folk at Soul Jazz. If anything is going to get me into it this is. Straight away there are surprises - Lynrd Skynrd's 'The Seasons' is far from the hoary Southern rock you may expect, Barefoot Jerry's Grocery is a quirky shuffle, Cher makes a pre-surgery appearance with 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' and Cowboy have a nice line in laid back country. I didn't realise what a nice voice Boz Skaggs has! So some prejudices have dissipated at least. Otherwise you get some 'classics' from the era that I could frankly do without, it's the obscure gems that make this worthwhile. Disappointed that Gene Clark is nowhere to be seen. His post Byrds output pisses all over a lot of this & he should be known as the one guy that consistently produced excellent work which dabbled in genres like a child at a pick and mix sweetshop.

· Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘Delta Swamp Rock’ is a
definitive guide to the music of the southern states
of USA created between 1968-1975, where
country, rock and soul met.
· Accompanying the deluxe double CD is a weighty
52 page book with many exclusive sleevenotes,
photographs and biographies.
· At the heart of this story lies the small town of
Muscle Shoals, Alabama (population around
10,000), central to the production of Southern soul
music produced in the United States in the second
half of the1960s.
· At the start of the 1970s Southern rock, a mixing
of rock, country and blues, emerged out of the
Southern states of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia,
Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida; the creation of
blue-collar white Americans with a newly
discovered pride in southern values, its way of life
and their local surroundings.
· ‘Delta Swamp Rock’ explores these musical and
cultural links between the towns and cities of
Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Macon in
Georgia and Daytona Beach and Jacksonville in
Florida, an interstate southern road trip where
country, rock and soul met at the crossroads.
