It's always an occasion to celebrate is a new Prefuse album. I was pretty much obsessed by him from the start and his recent albums have been welll.. mmm ... so so. But after spending a couple of hours with 'The Only She Chapters' I can vouch for it's ample goodness. He was the king of glitchy soulful cut up stuff and there's a hefty element of that on this album but it's way more mellow. It's way less beaty than previous affairs and it has a lot more in common with some of the modern compositional music that's kicking about today. There's a hefty dose of neo-classical goodness in there as well as his glitchy style of electronics all smothered in that warm organic feel he creates somewhat effortlessly. The other key thing to mention about this album is the plethora of female vocalists who add a whole new dimension to it. They turn into a dreamy ethereal affair with you being transported to some special kind of place which only has good things in it (the best kind of place!) So you get the late great Trish from Broadcast (RIP), Zola Jesus, the vocalist from My Brightest Diamond and lots of other women who sound like The School Of Seven Bells who aren't. There's plenty of weird soundscapes and experimental things going on in here but also lots of tunes. Something for everyone!
· Following more than ten years and seven albums at the
forefront of hip hop and avant rock, most recently mixing,
co-producing and touring with Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix
Point Never, Games) and collaborating with the likes of TV
On The Radio, Ghostface Killah, Battles, Mos Def, José
Gonzales, Blonde Redhead and Zach Hill to name a few,
Prefuse 73 (aka Guillermo Scott Herren)’s compositions
and interactions have clearly helped to shape the sonic
palette of independent music.
· The live front has seen Herren undertake several major
tours in the last year, including stretches with longtime
friend The Gaslamp Killer as well as Neon Indian, and most
noteworthy, working with the Polish Ausko Orchestra -
reinterpreting his own material for classical arrangement.
This evidenced Herren’s move into modern compositional
work, which brings us to ‘The Only She Chapters’, a body
of music closer in spirit to esteemed modern compositional
pieces, rather than a record built fundamentally around
beats and loops.
· The vocals of a number of renowned female musicians
have been woven into the album’s fabric, including Zola
Jesus, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and the late
Trish Keenan of Broadcast amongst others. The theme
continues with the artwork and his latest photographs also
produced by female artists.
· Double vinyl format limited to 150 copies in the UK.
