Jookabox - The Eyes of the Fly

We liked this Jookabox CD, at least a couple of us did here at the diversely staffed & attitude-rich compendium of rickety towers that is Norman. It seems only people with really stupid names make good music these days. Like Badger Flour & Horse Goblin. They're my new bands. But they're not as fun as David 'Moose' Adamson's project which is sonically engaging, inventive (mentally deranged) future-pop that bands like TV on the Radio have already forgotten how to be bothered to make. The vibe on 'Drops' lands somewhere between the aforementioned TVOTR & latter-day Flaming Lips but that's only a suggestion because there's a lot more eclectic, berserk stuff going on throughout this album than those psych-granddads are nowadays capable of. From the galloping garage rock weirdness of title-track 'The Eyes of a Fly' to the clattering tribal gibber-core of 'Nice-Boy', there's nothing remotely normal here but there's catchy hooks & rhythms aplenty. It sounds like a fucking musical zoo has escaped at times, albeit a zoo that is occasionally capable of cheerleading. Inventively this is on a parallel at least with the new Tune-Yards album but comes from a completely different dimension. Or many dimensions as there is not a decade where this album would slot in comfortably. If you want a weird, intense fucked-up album that has tons of ideas & a healthy amount of slavering irreverence then get involved
