Buen Chico - The Seasons EP

The Seasons EP by Buen Chico

4...according to our on Fri 25 Mar, 2011.

Buen Chico are a long serving Leeds indie-rock staple. After two full length rekkids and a few other bits and bobs to their name, Morgan Tatchell-Evans (singing, guitar), Kirsty Dolan (bass, singing) and Alan Kenworthy (drummer and cousin of the real Kenny) have been on a short break to write songs and re-evaluate their musical direction. They return with The Seasons EP, four tracks of indie rock with a newfound sense of maturity. Buen Chico tend to hang their musical ideas from the lyrical (mis)adventures of singer/guitarist Morgan who's must have gone through a period of deep contemplation in 2009/2010 as these songs are vast and complex in structure and incredibly serious in tone. Well, serious in Buen Chico terms anyway. Very ambitious stuff, this, and certainly more in tune with the modern indie pop we are currently hearing on the radio and that. I'm curious as to why spring has been neglected from their tribute to the seasons (song titles are 'Summer, 'Autumn', Winter' and 'Last Song'!)? Spring is easily the best season. Summer has a lot of pressure to deal with (will it be a hot summer? will I have fun? will I meet new friends and go on adventures? Will I see The Breeders? Tell me summer DAMN you!), yet spring only has to deliver on the promise of good times, and the promise is all the matters, right?

Buen Chico is Morgan Tatchell-Evans (singing, guitar), Kirsty Dolan (bass, singing) and Alan Kenworthy
(drums). It was born in Leeds in 2003 when these three idealistic sixth-formers met via the very modern
medium of the internet, into which they had meandered in search of like-minded musical souls on the eve of
their 18th birthdays.
After a couple of years cutting their teeth on the local music scene their first album, 'Right to Re-arrange', was
released, amidst radio airings from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens, and critical acclaim from
NME, Q, Drowned in Sound and This is Fake DIY.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, album two was soon underway. 'Our Love's Enormous' was released, DIY
style, in 2008. The album was an incisive but hopeful analysis of the state of the world, with an emphasis on the
importance of dancing as an alternative to consumption.
Having taken most of 2009 off to write, the band has developed a somewhat fuller sound coupled with a newly
discovered sense of drama. The first release from this batch of songs will be in the form of a free download
- available exclusively from http://philophobiamusic.bandcamp.com - entitled ‘Happiness is Important’
(available from 28th February). Lyrically, it sees Morgan bemoaning the fact that it can sometimes be quite
difficult not to be a twat, but that it’s probably worth trying anyway because, well, happiness is important. It
also features a massive, Weezer-ish guitar solo.
This song will be followed by The Seasons EP, to be released 28th March. Easily the band’s most ambitious
work to date, this tells the story of the life of an unnamed protagonist over the course of a year, and veers
musically from rollicking, Springsteen-tinged summery rock ‘n’ roll, to melancholic alt-rock, to a stomping,
Neil Young-ish finale, all tied together with seamless segues.
We hope you like the songs.
