Funny one for Sonic Cathedral, this, as it's quite traditional misery girl stuff with added Neil Young like humongous guitar solo's. Lauren Laverne has apparently written about this in her Grazia column no less (I remember her buying records from a 555 records stall at a Remote Viewer show not overly long ago) so should we sit up and take notice? The thing that strikes me initially is that her murmured whispered voice fails to sit confidently with the guitar pyrotechnics on show and is rather lost amidst the murk. When things are stripped back to a folky countryish pop lilt the melodies fail to register and the whole thing is rendered rather forgettable. That said, these aren't the type of albums to produce immediate results so it will take a few listens to find out if there is anything beneath.
• Sarabeth Tucek’s stunning second album is inspired by the death of her father; she calls it “an impressionistic rendering of a time ruled by grief”.
• Early champions of the new album include Lauren Laverne (who has tweeted about it and mentioned it in her Grazia column) and Marc Riley, who played the free download title track almost nightly on his BBC 6 Music show.
• Her debut album (released in 2007) was a big inspiration on Laura Marling’s ‘I Speak Because I Can’.
• Sarabeth has previously performed on records by Smog and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
• In 2007 she supported Bob Dylan.
• She tours the UK as special guest of The Leisure Society in May, as well as dates at Camden Crawl and other headline shows.
• ‘Get Well Soon’ is available on CD, digital download and 180g heavyweight vinyl (limited to only 300 copies; includes download code).
