The internet almost broke yesterday when this release was announced out of the blue and dropped exclusively on Rinse FM. For many I'm sure this is somewhat of a dream collaboration. Lest we forget though that both Burial and Fourtet previously collaborated on a 12" for Text and each in turn have also remixed Thom Yorke so it was almost bound to happen. Fourtet pretty much owns 'Ego' with his trademark playful electronics and synthetic marimba/ glockenspiel sounds, backed by some shuffling percussion from Burial and a very light dusting of his ghostly effects. Thom's vocal works well too and so this will certainly appeal to Radiohead fans that possibly otherwise wouldn't be that interested in Burial or Fourtet. Towards the end of the track a piano makes a surprise appearance reminding me of a wicked Omni Trio tune called 'Skeleton Key'. 'Mirror' on the flip, stylistically is closest to Burial's catalogue in terms of atmosphere, the foundation of which is the two-step, woodblock percussion. Yorke's vocal is given some ethereal treatment and Hebden's sounds creep into the mix. I'll be honest here, I'm not a huge fan of Thom Yorke by any stretch, I really like Fourtet's recent output and I adore Burial, and can say that for me at least, this isn't as strong as any of the artists work individually but the collaboration really does work as a sum its parts. Having spun both tracks a couple of times it would appear to be a grower too. Limited copies on black vinyl, black label, black inner sleeve and black disco bag with info etched into the run-out groove.
Released on Four Tet’s Text label
“We are excited to announce the latest release from Kieran Hebden’s brilliant TEXT RECORDS…
“A two track collaborative twelve inch from Burial + Four Tet + Thom Yorke…
“A-side is titled ‘EGO’, AA-side titled ‘MIRROR’. Plain black house bag and black label.
Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Four Tet, and dubstep enigma Burial have teamed up for a 12″ on Four Tet’s Text record label. Between them Thom Yorke, Burial and Four Tet are responsible for some of the most inventive, spell binding and emotionally involving music Britain has produced over the past decade. Now the three of them have confirmed details of a potentially fantastic 12 inch.
It is not yet known to what extent each will be involved, although the cast list alone makes this big news. Of course, Four Tet and Burial have worked together before. The pair released a split 12 inch on Text, which has gone on to become a collector’s item. Kept to a limited edition, the two producers cut a pair of tracks which veered between dubstep, garage and IDM.
Thom Yorke is the odd one out, having been remixed by both producers yet never working directly with them. Fresh from the artistic success of ‘The King Of Limbs’ the new 12 inch is the latest blast of material the songwriter has been involved in. Meawhile, Four Tet has been in the mood for collaboration recently. Kiren Hebden is working on another 12 inch with Caribou producer Dan Snaith, the results of which are set to drop later this Spring.
Containing appearances from Four Tet, Burial and Thom Yorke the new 12 inch sounds a little promising. A two track collaboration, the A-side is titled ‘EGO’ while the AA-side is titled ‘Mirror’.
