The Hit Parade is a ranked list of the most popular songs (and instrumentals) at a given point in time, usually determined by sales and airplay. The term originated in the 1930s; Billboard magazine published its first music hit parade on January 4, 1936. It has also been used by broadcast programs which featured hit (sheet music and record) tunes such as Your Hit Parade, a show which aired on radio and television in the United States from 1935 through the 1950s. The Hit Parade are named after said radio / television show and perform songs that may or may not have qualified for such an accolade. Unfortunately The Hit Parade doesn't really exist in any tangible form in the 21st Century so they may never find out if they have what it takes, which is a shame cause they write crispy little pop ditties...inspired no doubt by the likes of twee popsters Belle & Sebastian if I was to take a wild shot in the dark.
"There's Something About Mary" is the eleventh giddy single by The Hit Parade. It's released on 2nd May 2011 on 7" vinyl and follows hot on the heels of last year's bouncing 'I Like Bubblegum' cut, which was voted one of the best singles of 2010 by the well qualified people at Drowned In Sound. Reassuringly 'There's Something About Mary' is nothing to do with the 1998 Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz film of the same name. It's a song about a cat called Mary. Like many of the other singles by The Hit Parade it's a three minutes of harmony pop and strumming 60s guitars, and is available on 7" vinyl with a brightly coloured sleeve photographed by ace British photographer Martin Parr. On the b-side is a song called 'The Boy Who Loves Brighter', which is a tribute to the 1989 Sarah Records indie band Brighter who were famous for being melancholy and playing all their songs in the key of D. The Hit Parade is the non-du-guerre of Julian Henry, tireless pop enthusiast and writer of stuff about obscure bits of England. This single was recorded with Saint Etienne producer Ian Catt. The profits from the sales of the single are being donated to the Fisherman's Mission in in Newlyn in Cornwall
