Colourmusic aren't an easy band to pin down in a few sentences - I'm not even sure where they are from! Anyway, they make a technicoloured racket that manipulates rhythm and tone to it's own advantage to produce a sound heavy on groove and steeped in obscure low-end drones. 'My _____ is Pink' is made up of loads of micro-pop songs, all off which are a fairly interesting listen due to the economy used in their construction and the clever ways in which they are presented to the listener. They focus on solid beat patterns and obscure reverb drenched vocal hooks are is then melodically padded with fantastically minimalist bass lines and tons of mad synth tones and samples. They take on elements of Gospel, psych rock, acid-folk, pop and electro, fitting them easily into their bizarre pop vision. As wild as anything on the first few Kate Bush records and then some. A fascinating listen.
Welcome to the beautifully strange world of Colourmusic, a place where concept albums, an album named ‘My _____ Is Pink’ in this case, have nothing to do with structured narratives or loosely- linked lyrics. Musical walls that must be climbed, whether that means shunning acoustic guitars or modeling the rhythm section of some songs after metronomic sex acts.
• That explains a couple things, starting with ‘My _____ Is Pink’s actual sound. Rounded out by bassist Colin Fleishacker, drummer Nicholas Ley, and British guitarist Nick Turner, Colourmusic produce ever-evolving masses of melancholic melodies, gauzy vocals, shifty beats, and monophonic musical structures. Not to mention glimpses of agnostic gospel grooves (‘You For Leaving Me’), hip-shaking R&B (‘Feels Good To Wear’), acid-drenched pop (‘Tog’), and ‘Bladerunner’-inspired psych.
