Got a few bits in from Blackest Rainbow this week, which is always a treat and, though we've not got time to review them all (bit short staffed this week lads), we've plucked a few bits out for consideration, of which this 'Kerning' LP was one. Formally know as Outrage Is A Hat, C. Yantis is a dab hand on the old rock guitar. He twists all sorts of meditative magic from his axe, most likely carved of liquid gold (maybe). Yantis is gracious in his interpretation of experimental minimalism and ambient forms and yet I suspect his roots are mostly likely to be found in classic composition and American Folk/Blues music. 'Kerning' shows no sign of being overbearing or awkward on the ear yet it has all the hallmarks of great experimental music and is executed with style. There's lots to get involved with here as it's both abstract and melodically inviting in a remarkably consistent fashion. Yantis uses his guitar as a centre piece for all sorts of abstract elements to come into play, taking piano, looped effects, strings, banjo, chimes, percussion, bells (and more) he litters his compositions with shades of colour, forever tinkering with his creations. At times he shows great restraint which is working well for me at this rather late point in the evening. David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke come to mind which is a good thing innit. Got to Buy It, Got to Buy It!
