Daydreamer by Youngteam

This album might force me to have to reconsider my 'never trust a band named after an album or song' rule. Initial misgivings about the Mogwai stealing name and opening burst of noise fade quickly as the title track bursts through the stereo. It's a fab blast of '60's influenced pop with a garagey reverby feel, similar to Brian Jonestown Massacre or early Lily's, yet with a shoegaze sludge which recalls the fantastic pre 'Isn't Anything' My Bloody Valentine. 'Black Lodge' revives the sound of early Ride with Byrdsian harmonies sparring with noisy guitars and a Phil Spector-ish production. The whole thing is drenched in cavernous sound, and reminds me of the best bits of the patchy Serena Maneesh albums and as they are Scandinavian I'll drop in the all-too-obvious Mew comparison! On first pickings this sounds an excellent record and could become a shoegaze classic if the press pick up on it. Watch this space!

*Daydreamer is the debut album from Stockholm's Youngteam and the first full length band release on Northern Star
*Records. Recorded mostly live with top Swedish producer Mattias Glava (Dungen, Soundtrack of our lives) at the helm,
Daydreamer is a dark, stark, unsettling beauty of a record.
*Their music recalls a whole host of greats such as Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Sonic Flower Groove – era
Primal Scream and Brian Jonestown Massacre, but like all great bands, Youngteam transcend their influences and arrive
at their own unique sound. There is no better description of their music than the album title itself ‘Daydreamer’ with its
skyscraping guitars and lyrics that evoke lazy summer days and refer to being lost in a dream. Despite the apparent
darkness of the overall album, in Daydreamer Youngteam provide more than their fair share of perfect pop moments to
keep you returning again and again.
*Youngteam have featured prominently on Northern Star’s legendary Psychedelica compilation series alongside the likes
of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, The Telescopes, The Hiss, The Electric Soft Parade, The Nova
Saints, The December Sound and many others.
*Starting out as a musical collective in their native Stockholm, Sweden, Youngteam’s evolution has seen them go from 2
full time members with a rotating cast on their debut EP Missnosjesbandet to a fully settled 4 piece band. Youngteam
have previously featured a number of significant musicians in their ranks including Anna Järvinen (previously associated
with Granada and Dungen) who is now a successful solo artist in her own right. Anna Järvinen has gone on to have
success in her native Finland and Sweden achieving a top ten album. The band also feature members of Penti and
Speedmarket Avenue.
- “From Scandinavia are the rather wonderful Stockholm collective Youngteam who veer from shoegaze to psychedelia to
indie pop more often than not within the same song - their debut Missnojesbandet provides the perfect soundtrack to the
next summer of love.” Drowned In Sound
- “The Swedish guitar underground has thrown up some magical gems in recent times with the likes of Jeniferever and
Youngteam both taking significant strides via incendiary live performances and the odd breathtaking release thrown in for
good measure.” Contact
- “A musical place where jangly guitars meet shoegaze "Daydreamer" is amongst the most exciting news for the year to
come. We salute this wonderful release.” Retrophobic
A stark, dark unsettling beauty of an album with elements of psychedelia, shoegaze and dreampop.” When The Sun
Hits
