Don't know a huge amount about Alt. County types Okkervil River though I do recall the Roky Erickson LP 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' that boasts these lads as backing band and producer. Okkers new single is a bold, production heavy affair that tugs right on them there heartstrings. 'Wake And Be Fine' is a striking effort that brings to mind elements of Kate Bush and the like with it's suave arrangement and big drum production. The splattering's of piano and the heavy string arrangement bring this beast to life. Flip it and I'm presented with the mellower 'Weave Room Blues' that begins with a stripped back ghostly guitar and vocal arrangement. Drums, percussion, electric guitar, horns and various other elements make an appearance as the song evolves to it's crescendo but their presence is smattered and fleeting contributing colour to this simple vocal-led song. Very considered, grown-up stuff this.
‘Wake And Be Fine’ is the first single from the
forthcoming ‘I Am Very Far’ album from Okkervil
River.
Work on ‘I Am Very Far’ started after a year spent
on other projects. Band member Will Sheff
contributed vocals to The New Pornographers’
album ‘Together’, wrote a song for Norah Jones'
‘The Fall’, produced an upcoming album for the
Brooklyn-based band Bird Of Youth, and helmed
Roky Erickson's acclaimed ‘True Love Cast Out All
Evil’ with Okkervil River. (Sheff’s liner notes for
said album earned him a 2011 Grammy
nomination.)
