Gary Higgins - A Dream A While Back

· The Drag City reissue of Gary Higgins’ 1974 psychfolk
classic ‘Red Hash’ album was the reissue event
of 2005. ‘A Dream A While Back’ is a collection of
songs recorded around the time preceding ‘Red
Hash’.

· The songs reveal the deep strain in Gary’s
songwriting: bittersweet but playful, pointed but
impressionistic, eerie and insistent. Vocal-andguitar
recordings present the songs humbly, but
before long the lyrics and melodic changes are
drifting like smoke into the listener’s mind,
clouding simplicity with paradox while pointing
towards inevitable truth.

· ‘A Dream A While Back’ is another powerful entry
point into the long and winding history of Gary
Higgins.
