Submarine (Original Songs) by Alex Turner

Well, there's a girl very close to my heart who's a bit in love with Richard Ayoade (amongst numerous other wise-cracking contemporary comedians) and she informed me he was making a film. It's one of those coming-of-age comedy drama things but I reckon it'll be proper sound. Especially with these dinky songs forming a dreamy soundtrack of sorts. It's that lad from T' Monkeys doing a solo acoustic take on gentle psychedelic pop & it's quite lovely from start to finish. On the more reflective earlier tracks he once more indulges in the sort of hallowed retro whimsy that Uncle Richard Hawley has made his own in recent times. His ability to breathe life into well-worn singer-songwriter modes is unparalleled here and the last two tracks with more of a full band feel are proper timeless, wistful nuggets that should make the film's producers feel even more proud. It's probably one for fans of Badly Drawn Boy et al, but the boy Turner effortlessly reveals a distinctive knack for a winning tune and he gives it his all here, showcasing exactly why he's one of the UK's finest song-writing marvels!
