As spring is approaching and the leaves are starting to unfurl, it's nice to listen to some slinky, summery future funk of a morning. This is a split 10" between famed LA photographer Brian Coleman (Madvillain etc.) and Guru influenced dude Ta'Raach. If, as the press release suggests this is Coleman's first release then its an excellent start - 4 tracks of Madlib influenced instrumental hip-hop with skew-whiff beats, soul samples galore and atmospheric synths, the highlight being 'Write Thing' which rises above everything else with some superb sensuous lady vocals. Ta'Raach produces familiar solid beats, a more minimalist approach with glints of keys and vocal samples flitting in and out of the mix. Some tracks comprise of just bass and beats, simple, classic.
The penultimate release of this series features noted LA photographer Coleman and Detroit producer/MC Ta’Raach. A founder of the Mochilla music and visual art collective, Brian Coleman aka B+ has been photographing LA people and places since he was 12. The man behind the Madvillain cover photos, he has had tracks on ‘Keep In Time’ and the seminal ‘From LA With Love’ compilation, but steps up here for his first “solo” release proper, with four tracks including the first vocal of the series recorded with Eglo’s Fatima on a recent Westside trip. On the Ta’raach side, his six tracks blend as one. Having previously released on Sound In Color and Poobah, this is his first solo material in a couple of years and he sticks to the beats template here, doffing his cap to Guru along the way.
