Belong / I Wanna Go All The Way by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

1...according to our on Fri 11 Mar, 2011.

The world woke up to shocking news this morning sure to send waves of panic across the world, I'm sorry to have to break it to you but............The Pains of Pure at Heart have released a new single. Oh and there's been a tsunami in Japan and The Darkness are reforming. Black friday they are calling it. Put the needle on the record and I guarantee 3 minutes later you will not recall a single thing you've heard. Its kind of X factor plays a Jesus and Mary Chain B side. I wasn't over keen on this lots first album but at least it was a fair to middling My Bloody Valentine impression with a few memorable hooks. This is just awful, forgettable. The B side is a Revolver outtake sung by a chipmunk. Horrible. No stars.

7” Coloured Vinyl Single. For Fans Of: My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths, Jesus And Mary Chain, The Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, Wild Nothing, Creation Records, C86. By now, you would probably have heard the gorgeously yearning slice of swoon pop that is “Heart in Your Heartbreak”, the first teaser from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s much anticipated upcoming album. And you might have noticed that while all the essential qualities that mark out the band so distinctly are still there – shimmering melodies, Kip Berman’s wistful lyrics and beguiling, quavering vocals – their sound has also been ratcheted up to the next level, courtesy of producers Alan Moulder and Flood, who, for the next step in Pains’ career, have created a canvas that is as lush as it is expansive. New single “Belong”, released on March 14, sounds even bigger, with buzzsawing, Smashing Pumpkins-circa-Gish guitars slicing intermittently through Pains’ beautifully jangling wall of noise. And even though it comes equipped with hooks to spare and an infectious, anthemic climax of “we don’t belong”, the sweet melodies bely its acute study of restlessness and human (dis)connection (“What to do/ nothing new/ we’ve tried each other/ let’s try another”, Berman sighs at one point) and manages to lodge itself in the listener’s brain long after its short but sweet running time is over. It is yet another scintillating look at what the band have in store with their sophomore album (to be released shortly after), and which is sure to be one of the highlights of the year. Additionally, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are also set to return to our shores this spring for another run of live dates; beginning in February at La Route du Rock in France, and ending with a one-off UK date at Kings College in London in March. "Pure indiepop to hold close to your heart." – NME
