Trying..to..avoid review....cliche...by not...actually...placing my...fingers on the keyboard...so here is my review for the House Of John Player/Toddlers split 7"..................
Great stuff wasn't it? Only joshing chief, its good for morale. The House Of John Player side is sort of downbeat electronica, that has a sweet hazy feel to it. Quite experimental sounding and well interesting. I don't think it sounds like any one I've heard so that's a good thing. And they are Bletchley lads so that gives them at least an extra 10 points. The Toddlers side is more traditional rock type fare...only in the sense of there are instruments being played in a sort of band style. Its not too bad. It does creep into post rock wilderness which might trouble younger listeners. It's a good release is this so raise a glass to both bands and welcome them over your threshold. It all comes with acouple of compilation CDs one of them features the excellent Hired Muscle, one of the greatest bands to come out of Bletchley EVER!
This release is not only the first on vinyl for Reading based music organisation doubledotdash!?, it also marks the first non CD-R release for two of the most forward thinking artists in the Home Counties DIY music scene.
House Of John Player is the solo YO! wave project of Dean Spacer, a young man with a voice of gold from Bletchley. Part of the same scene that has birthed Action Beat and Hired Muscle into the world, and Dean operates with similar guile and passion, getting his hands dirty the old fashioned way.
Toddlers are Will and Liam from Reading. They play bass and drums respectively. Due to their configuration they are endlessly compared to Lightning Bolt and Death From Above 1979 - in truth they sound nothing like these two bands, and more like a spacey combination of Scientist and Neu.
The record features two tracks by House Of John Player - 'Shyrite' and 'Son Esqueet' - and one by Toddlers - 'Preston'.
