I'm going to try & keep this brief as i've already gushed stupidly from great heights about this band on many occasion, their 'You Can Have What You Want' album being one of my most precious records. I know not what makes me feel like vomiting superlatives & crying with happiness everytime I hear Jason Quever. He's not even doing anything bloody original the lazy little tyke! If you've got 'Prefection' by Cass McCombs I'd like to say you don't need to own this fourth Papercuts album but that would be a massive bare-faced lie. An untruth that could crush you into the ground like an ant into dust. No, he isn't really a Cass clone at all. His songs have that heavy hearted, dream-like aura that very few artists successfully harness. Everything's buried under a dusty sheen of reverb that I find totally irresistible. The song 'Chills' funnily enough sounds like the band of the same name - has a real 'Pink Frost' tint to it. There's also a real hearty hint of bands such as Beach House. Sad enigmatic lullabies from another universe, beamed into your life to make everything better. And the fact that he manages to pinch the best bit of all your favourite bands and make a delicious melancholic casserole from them - a true musical chef. God bless yer son, congratulations on delivering another perfect baby album!
· Papercuts prinicipal Jason Robert Quever’s
beautiful songwriting is thoughtful, evocative,
subtle, and simultaneously ambitious. And the new
Papercuts album, ‘Fading Parade’, the band’s
fourth overall, is dream pop of the highest order.
· Crafted over the course of several months at The
Hangar in Sacramento, with Thom Monahan, and
at Quever’s own Pan American Recording
studio, ’Fading Parade’ is meticulously designed
pop music, with a fully developed sense of space
and a sturdy wall of sound.
· With the aid of strings, autoharp, Mellotron,
Moogs, 12-string acoustic guitars, piano,
echoplexes, analog and digital recording methods,
this new album is wide-ranging and adventurous,
through the up-tempo jangle of ‘Do You Really
Wanna Know’, the soaring and resonant ‘Do What
You Will’, the moody swirl of ‘I’ll See You Later, I
Guess’, the folky, piano-driven ‘Winter Daze’, and
on.
· Imagine Belle & Sebastian teaming up with
Slowdive and recording with Phil Spector.
· ‘Fading Parade’ is Papercuts’ first album for Sub
Pop.
