Fielded - White Death

White Death by Fielded

4...according to our on Thu 03 Feb, 2011.

Onto something with words now. I can't remember the last time I reviewed something with singing in it? Must have been weeks! Anyhoo Fielded is Lindsay Powell (possibly better known as one half of Festival (Language of Stone) who I think are kinda folky. This single is kinda folky and mystical with a massive injection of goth stabbed into its face. It's dark brooding strange gothy folk music which I reckon is gonna sit nicely with the folks who are digging Zola Jesus and the like. There's a couple of busier tracks on this EP with drum machines and keyboards which I'd consider to be poppy (ish) and a couple which are more vocal and weird sounding. It's an interesting debut single though with lo-fi roots and seeing as though they've managed to cram 4 tracks on it then it's reasonably good value for money. 250 only for 't world.

Fielded is the solo project of Lindsay Powell, vocalist of Ga'an (Captcha Records) and one half of sister songstresses Festival (Language of Stone). By using vocals and minimal instrumentation, Powell explores the many moods that can be created through experimentation with voice as leader rather than follower of the amplified instrument. She moves from dark to light and back to dark - a church chorus, cacophonous chants, a post-apocalyptic pop paradise, but always of the throat; fluent and deranged. The voice is the thread throughout, tying together juxtaposing moments and revealing a world both archaic and contemporary.
Picking up and sweeping forward with this home-sewn, four-song 7", White Death is Fielded's first release since stunning us with Terrageist (Catholic Tapes, 2010), the Chicago Music Award-nominated full-length for which her praises were sung by Kevin Hufnagel (of Dysrhythmia, in his Top Ten Albums of The Year) and Foxy Digitalis, referring to Fielded as "a collection of all the best moments of Bjork, which makes her better." The White Death 7" is a special, limited-edition pressing of 250 (150 black/100 white) with art direction by Mikie Poland (Aethletics) and hand-printed/fold-over jackets by Dan Davis (Kin Ship Press). Available March 1st, 2011 on Sophomore Lounge.
