Really enjoyed this Magazine series so far. The 'Cologne Tapes' super group affair was a particularly appealing listen and from what I've heard so far this collaboration between Drums Off Chaos & Jens-Uwe Beyer is another winner. Drums of Chaos is a loose collective of percussionists founded by Jaki Liebezeit of CAN and this is their first proper release since thier inception 30 years ago. Encouraged by the opportunity to work with Jens-Uwe Beyer (aka Popnoname) Jaki Liebezeit the Drums Of Chaos lads decided to commit some of there metronomic, highly calculated drum work outs to tape which is great news for us all. The record begins with an onslaught of heavily reverberated percussion before settling into synth based ambient musings. This chilled out interval doesn't last long before the dominance of rhythm rears it's head once more. The atmosphere of this music is surprisingly tribal sounding considering the background of the artists involved. It also has a sense of doom about it due to the addition of crazy deep vocal tones and a reliance on reverb to create a ghostly atmosphere. Saying that, it's a totally appealing listen if not quite as uplifting as I'd hope. Keep 'em coming Magazine. Worth noting that the LP comes with a free CD as opposed to a download. These lads are keeping it physical.
After 2 releases by supergroup "Cologne Tape" and "Barnt" it's now up to Drums Off Chaos, Jaki Liebezeit of CAN and Jens-Uwe Beyer (aka Popnoname) to continue MAGAZINE's musical journey with a breathtaking album of ultra-rhythmic krautrock/ electronics.
Founded in Cologne the early 1980s, the anarchistic formation Drums Off Chaos has continued uninterrupted to the present day. The collective of Jaki Liebezeit, Reiner Linke, Maf Retter, Manos Tsangaris and others make music centered on dynamic but still very precise rhythmic codes using carefully selected sounds and patterns on self-constructed drums. Previously, the group considered the shared and nonrecurring experience of playing live more important than getting the music recorded. The latest release however is the result of a collaboration with Cologne-based musician Jens-Uwe Beyer,. Thus, the Drums Off Chaos sound is available on record for the first time after almost 30 years! (aside from a experimental singer collaboration available as a very limited CD mail order release)
Beyer – from a generation that grew up with Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project rather than with Can – opens the record with the beat of a gong adding irradiant sounds and elements of soft rhythms, which over time interweave seamlessly with the energetic drum sound. The slowly floating melodies and punctuated bass of Beyer convey an almost monasterial intensity which underpins and reinforces the exacting rhythm of the drums.
Vinyl-LP comes with a free CD-version of the Album!
