Fists - Ascending / Stag

Ascending / Stag by Fists

4...according to our on Thu 10 Mar, 2011.

Fists are a Nottingham five piece with a few 7"s behind and plenty more to come. Today we are treated to a new offering on Hello Thor that comes in a rather handsome photo / Screen printed sleeve. A-side 'Stag' is an ambitious affair that couples the loose lo-fi swagger of The Velvet Underground with the drug induced majesty of Spiritualized. The song begins in a Women-esque kind of way with a drawl of a vocal line before picking up midway and transforming into an indie rock spiritual complete with rousing chorus and big drum bits. Flip it and you get a very different beast. From the intro riff this sorta reminded me of Canned Heat or something like that. Kinda kooky country tinged pop with a female singer at the helm yet listening through it's essentially a well written garage pop song but it hints at all sorts of other styles. It's a well executed tune that's just rough enough around the edges to to appeal to the youth on the street.

For fans of: The Breeders, Yo La Tengo, The Monks, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, Clinic, Daniel Johnston.  After a triumphant 2010 Nottingham-based 5-piece Fists return with their brand new single Ascending / Stag through Hello Thor Records on Monday 21st February 2011.  Recorded with producer Rory Brattwell (S.C.U.M, Comanechi, Fair Ohs, Male Bonding, Veronica Falls), Ascending / Stag will be available on limited edition green 7” vinyl and digital download.  The single - which has already received airplay from BBC 6Music’s Cerys Matthews and Tom Ravenscroft, and XFM's Jon Hillcock - perfectly exemplifies Fists’ DIY sound as it flits from lilting lo-fi pop to stomping yet experimental garage rock.  Ascending beautifully showcases the band’s way with an insistent, infectious melody: its bittersweet country twang and kaleidoscopic waves of guitar are accompanied warmly by a heartfelt, uplifting vocal.  “…reckless pop music…so refreshing” - Cerys Matthews.  Stag is a claustrophobic construction of tribal drumming, Velvet Underground drone, and precise, staccato guitar riffs.  Through this carefully worked musical mist comes an intriguing, breathless tale of confusion and violence, before the whole thing erupts into an emotional, anthemic finale.  "...this odd beast…builds to what can only be described as a wonderful, euphoric, shouty climax" - Jon Hillcock.  2010 saw Fists handpicked to appear on Rough Trade's Counter Culture compilation alongside Emmy The Great, The XX and Fever Ray.  They went on to release an EP (Olympic Hits, which was played and praised by the likes of 6Music and NME), play a series of storming festival dates and tour with Sparrow & The Workshop.  Ascending / Stag is released on hand-numbered limited edition 500 only green 7” vinyl, with screen-printed sleeve and free downloads, through Hello Thor Records on Monday 21st February 2011.
