This LP is the final installment in the fifteen part 'Bird Series', all previous editions were CD's so a fine way to go out with a slab of wax - which are relatively few and far between for this Japanese creative force. Feeling somewhat tired and weary this is like a shot of sonic adrenalin giving me a second wind with throbbing low end eruptions, chaotic extreme pulses and gargantuan crashing walls of rhythmic power electronics. Let's face it, we expect nothing less from the man who is truly a master of his art. When I'm in the right mood, like right now, this stuff can take me astral. Recorded 2009 with artwork by Masami. Phwoooaar!
Jigokuhen is the final instalment in Masami Akita's 15 part Bird Series for Important Records. Inspired by Olivier Messaien's Catalogue D'Oiseaux, the Bird Series saw the release of one CD per month for 13 months while a 14th disc was released free via download to series subscribers and on CDr with the purchase of Merzbow's EcoBag. This 14th Bird Series release is being issued on the 2 year anniversary of the start of the Bird Series and in conjuntion with Vampilla's new album on Important which Merzbow contributed some major mixing work. Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psycedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especial Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own.
